| PPPoE |
What is PPPoE? Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet is a method used to establish a PPP connection through Ethernet adapters. It's used by many broadband service providers to allow authentication. Much like the familiar Dial-up Networking interface. You'll mainly come across this type of connection using DSL. If you are using, or plan on using DSL, and are part of a SBC Network, chances are you'll be affected and tackling a few problems.
How about using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) in Windows? If you're using a PPPoE connection there are several ways of going about it. One is using a utility called RASPPPoE, (which by the way works nicely) or go the easy route and spring for a broadband router. I've personally done it both ways. With the price of routers well under $100, I see no reason to even play around with ICS. The drawbacks in using RASPPPoE are obvious. There's a need for the ICS computer to be on at all times to name one. With a Broadband router, any user at any time, can connect at will. There's a wealth of information on PPPoE, broadband in general, and networking possibilities at DSLReports . Here's something to keep in mind. If you've updated your system with Microsoft's Remote Access Service Security Update, your RASPPPoE connection may not work! Uninstall the Hot Fix before even attempting the install of RASPPPoE. |
